Disney’s Tower of Terror (1997) is a charmingly spooky family mystery that turns a popular theme park ride into an entertaining adventure. Starring Steve Guttenberg and a young Kirsten Dunst, the film follows a disgraced reporter investigating the decades-old disappearance of five guests at the haunted Hollywood Tower Hotel. Based on Disney’s famous attraction, it was the studio’s first movie adaptation of a theme park ride.
While clearly aimed at a younger audience, Tower of Terror delivers plenty of atmosphere, old-Hollywood charm, and light supernatural thrills. The mystery unfolds at a brisk pace, and the recreation of the iconic hotel is surprisingly effective for a made-for-TV production. Though it lacks the scares of a true horror film, its mix of ghosts, comedy, and adventure has earned it a loyal cult following among Disney fans.
