BFI’s Blu-ray/DVD release of It Couldn't Happen Here is exactly the kind of gloriously odd pop artifact that feels like it shouldn’t exist—and yet here it is, lovingly restored. Starring Pet Shop Boys, the film is less a traditional narrative and more a surreal, synth-drenched fever dream packed with dry humour, deadpan performances, and unmistakably ‘80s charm.

The real win here is the presentation—BFI have done a cracking job cleaning up a film that’s always been more cult curiosity than mainstream hit. It’s still weird (very weird), but now it’s crisp, stylish weird.

Unsurprisingly, this special edition sold out almost instantly and is now out of print, making it just as elusive as the film itself.
